What does quality of life mean?
Now that I joined 40 club I wonder if I’ve become any wiser, did I learn anything from the mistakes I’ve made. This especially refers to my daily habits the way I’m using my free time, the efficiency and effectiveness of my efforts.
So I made a check-list on habits and practices, things that I supposed to do and important things I value. I narrowed the list and came to these five daily routines that I find very helpful for me. I believe they can get me better quality of life.
Every morning needs fresh start
Breathe deeply, jump, and stretch. Many will say that this is possible for those who are single or without kids. I would not argue on that, but I know parents great quality of life because they find 10 minutes every morning to do these things that gives them such energy boost that they can handle any situation afterwards.
Its best for you if you wake up without alarm, but if you must find some nice melody. Don’t rush standing up. Just sit on the age of your bed, close your eyes sit still and breathe deeply. Imagine that with every breath you are inhaling fresh energy and positiveness. If you can combine this with music, than you have the right combination for positive and fresh start of the day.
If you are traveling by bus or metro put the headphones on and listen to your favorite music, maybe a movie soundtrack, find that piece of music that inspires you. I have list of Hans Zimmer’s best soundtrack titles and also after 20 years over and over again I listen to The Last of the Mohicans soundtrack as one of my all time favorites.
Working quality of life
Our life quality depends on many things. Working place is where we lose the most of it. So my advice is take rest while working. I know that for many of us it may seem impossible. Maybe it is not allowed at your workplace to waste time. But use every possible chance to stretch to shake a little bit, walk around do anything that will improve your circulation so you can get some blood in your brain. I work in an office and spend 6 hours in front of the computer. But every half an hour I get up and do some squats, stretch my hands, my neck. At the beginning my colleagues were like WTF, but now they are used to this.
If it’s possible use at least 10 minutes of your lunch break and find some peaceful place to be in silence. Yes I’m aware that some of us have gyms in their working place and some hardly have 30 minutes for grabbing some bite and some don’t have any free time at work. That doesn’t mean that you should give up on the idea.
Turn your phone off
Before entering home, turn your phone off and leave everything that worries you, which stresses you outside in front of your house. If you want better quality of life, you have to shut it down, at least for some time.
The first you should do when entering your home is hug your family members, sincerely. Kiss and Hug each one of them, your pets to. Spend with them 5-10 minutes, with each one, because soon through your door all that stuff that you left outside will break through and bring disharmony.
Preserve your time and energy
Don’t waste your time and energy while being home or at work on banalities such as small talks, criticizing, watching TV and so on. I know that it would be good to just stop thinking for a moment and plug in into some different state of mind. But men, every motivational speaker or life coach emphasize the importance of using our time for self-improvement. That means using our mind as our best friend as Bhagavad Gita suggests. That doesn’t mean that you should not take a nap because you are exhausted but if you need energy there are drills and food that can help you.
Importance of sleep
They say we need 7 to 8 hours of good sleep. Before going to sleep, I practice one simple drill that the old ancient Greeks (Pythagoras in particular) used to do for improving their memory and mental health. I had doubts at the beginning but it really works. I lie down and go backwards through everything that happened that day. It especially helps me to remember and connect places and people. Of course there is a mainstream way to improve you sleep and overall life quality. You can take some supplements such as melatonin or herbal tea and avoid eating at least three hours before going to bed.
Of course, each of these habits can be absolved in more detailed way. Just wanted to share what works for me, and maybe some of you will get inspired and make improvement on their habits, because we all want a better quality of life. Don’t we?
